Ultrasound Guided FNAC evaluates how well the thyroid gland is producing and regulating hormones. What does Ultrasound Guided FNAC measure?
Ultrasound Guided FNAC collects cells from a lump or nodule using a thin needle guided by ultrasound. The sample is examined under a microscope to look for abnormal cells. It helps tell whether a growth is benign, infected, inflamed, or cancerous. A blood sample is analysed using immunoassay technology. TSH is typically ordered first; if abnormal, a full panel including free T3, free T4, and antibodies is ordered to characterise the type and cause of thyroid dysfunction.
What do the results of Ultrasound Guided FNAC mean?
Once thyroid replacement or anti-thyroid treatment is started, TSH is rechecked every 6 to 8 weeks until levels stabilise within the target range, then annually. Over-treatment of hypothyroidism (TSH too low from too high a dose of levothyroxine) increases the risk of osteoporosis and atrial fibrillation. Under-treatment leads to persistent symptoms.
